2,000+ GWMore than 2,000 gigawatts of new power plants and batteries are waiting to connect to the grid.
85%of the power waiting in line is solar, wind and battery storage.
5+ yearsThe typical project now waits more than five years from asking to connect to delivering power.
888 milesof major new power lines were built in 2024, down from nearly 4,000 in 2013.
18.2¢per kWh, the average household price this year, up from 17.0¢. About $10 more a month.

Sources: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Queued Up 2026 (end of 2025); Americans for a Clean Energy Grid and Grid Strategies; U.S. Energy Information Administration, January to August 2026 vs. 2025. The $10 is a CNL estimate at typical household use.

Why this matters

In 2026, America is asking for more of our electrical grid than we have in a generation, and our aging energy infrastructure can’t keep up. The increasing electrification of our economy, as we’ve adopted more clean tech into our homes and daily lives, has driven record power usage, and new energy projects haven’t come online fast enough. As a result, household electricity prices have skyrocketed, while broader energy costs have risen about 5% this year alone.
